Only novels this month. I am sadly behind in my New Yorker reading and my aversion to anything related to America’s Next Top President ‘08 means that my usual sources of nonfiction are somewhat limited. Raves this month include Bel Canto and Prep.

    Re nonfiction: I am currently reading The Suspicions of Mr Whicher by Kate Summerscale, a bit of Victorian true-crime about an appalling murder at a well-to-do country house and the investigation that followed. It also ties in the case with the rise of Victorian detective fiction. Highly recommended.

    Thanks for the list. Great idea … and inspiration. Guess I’d better pick up Bel Canto; not sure why I’ve resisted so long. Um, could be the bookstack already reaching serious heights on the nightstand?
